Hazel Marie Gushen Moore 84, of Coleman, Formerly of Saginaw was promoted to Glory on Sunday April 14, 2024. She had battled dementia for several years and her transition was swift and peaceful. Some of us called her Mom, some called her Grandma, Sister, Cousin and Auntie. But all who knew her, considered her their Friend and that was perhaps her most cherished title.
Hazel was the eldest daughter of Walter and Ruth (Hammond, Hunt) Gushen. She entered the world on July 12, 1939, and would have celebrated her 85th birthday this July. She was the proud big sister of Eleanor and Carolyn. She married Charles Moore on June 18, 1960, and together, they raised three children, Judy, Mike and Jim (often said with all three names strung together!). She was a stay-at-home Mom for many years and was often found volunteering at school and church events – usually as the “Pick Pocket Lady” for Herig Holidays. Her love of volunteering led her to Scouting and for over 50 years, she was a volunteer or ardent supporter of Scouting first as a Girl Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother and then through various roles in the district and council. This exposure led her to her beloved position with Scouts as the Trading Post Manager from which she retired after 20+ years of service. Her Scouting resume is long and accomplished and includes Scout and Cub Woodbadge, Silver Beaver, and multiple awards of recognition. She even had a couple of stints as Camp Cook for Camp Rotary!!
Hazel was also a devoted volunteer for The Miss Saginaw County pageant for 30+ years. First as a mom, then serving as a hostess and backstage manager. Her dedication and impartiality towards every contestant was an inspiration to the entire organization.
She also spent many years with the Saginaw Gun club and the Saginaw Field and Stream. First starting as a volunteer and eventually becoming a pistol competitor, winning numerous awards.
She was an active member of Ames UMC, and she loved Jesus with all of her heart!  She was particularly fond of encouraging the young people and served the church in many volunteer roles as well as being a member of the larger church’s Emmaus group and Boy Scout Troop 304.
After retirement from the Scout Office, she began a second career with Hozer’s Hearing Clinic (now HearingLife) in Saginaw and enjoyed many years with Hozer’s providing excellent customer service and community education via health fairs and visits with community organizations. She was respected and well-loved everywhere she went, and it was a joy to be with her at those events as everyone was so HAPPY to see Hazel. Her radiant smile would greet everyone and they were instantly friends for life!
Her family will miss her dearly, but we trust that she is in Heaven and fully healed!  Judy and David Robinson London, England, Michael Moore and Bill Harnsberger Portland ME, Jim and Frances Moore Bay City MI were privileged to call her our Mother.  Nicole and Kevin Meier, Bethany Minar and Michael Driver were blessed to call her Grandma and Owen and Mason Meier got to love her as their Great Grandma.  Her sister, Eleanor Hanson, her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lamblin and her cousin Nancy Swantek have been constant fixtures in her life and provided many hours of laughter throughout the years.  Her many nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews had the joy of growing up with Aunt Hazel and spent many times together making memories. Those that have gone before her are also in our hearts and include her parents Walter and Ruth, her sister Carolyn Wielinski, her brother-in-law Brad Hanson, her former husband, Charles Moore and many, many family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday April 20, 2024, at the O’Laughlin Funeral Home Inc. with Rev. Lisa Kelly officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8pm and Saturday starting at 10am until the time of the service. To honour Hazel, some of her family will be wearing their scout uniforms. Please feel free to join us by wearing your own uniform or other BSA insignia.
In lieu of Flowers, please consider a plant or flower that could be planted in “Grandma’s Garden” on the Meier property. Mom lived with them for a year and had her own little garden so it would bring all of us joy to see that area grow in her memory.
