Gordon H. “Smitty” Smith, 87, of Coleman died Thursday June 20, 2024 at MyMichigan Medical Center, Midland. He was born August 16, 1936 in Gulliver, the son of the late Harold & DeEtta (Rice) Smith.

Gordon married Eunice V. Powers May 11, 1957 in Coeburn, Virginia. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1954-1957. He worked as a carpenter on bridge construction in the state of Michigan for 39 years. Smitty was a big Coleman Comets fan and he enjoyed all levels of athletic competition. He loved his grandkids and watching their activities and events.

Survivors include his wife Eunice, children: Darrell & Gail Smith of Coleman, Darwin Smith Three Oaks, Becky & Kery Tipton of North Carolina, Derwood & Michelle Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Dennis & Sandy Smith of Edmore, Dirk & Marge Smith of Farwell, 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, brother Randy Smith of Moran, several nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Stephanie Smith, brothers, George and Loren Smith, Sr., sisters Eva Jane Spencer, Candace Stellwag, Mary Ann Merritt.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Smitty’s life will be held September 14, 2024 at the Coleman Park Pavilion. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Coleman Athletic Boosters.
