Mark Alan Horswill, 68, of Coleman, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2025. Mark was born in Detroit,
Michigan, on December 6, 1956, to Robert and Janet (Harris) Horswill.
Mark was a proud graduate of Farwell High School, Class of 1975, where he played the trombone in the high
school band, earning first-chair status as a freshman. Highly decorated, his accolades earned him a four-year
music scholarship.
Mark was employed by Faulkner Construction as an industrial painter, holding the lead position for 20 years at the
Dow Corning Medical Plant. He was a proud union member of IUPAT, Local #1803, with a career spanning 37
years.
A natural athlete, Mark excelled at many sports. He took pride in the camaraderie and competition of playing
darts alongside his teammates from Bomber’s Bar and Grill. As a talented bowler, he carried a consistent 190
average, rolling two 700+ series. One of his proudest accomplishments was pitching a perfect game in men’s slow-
pitch softball in the ‘80s. He also coached a ladies’ softball team. Mark was passionate about playing golf from
high school into adulthood. He was proud to have achieved two holes-in-one, earning him the nickname “The
Boss of the Moss.” As a lifelong Detroit Lions and Tigers fan, Mark had a keen eye for accurately calling plays,
often outshining the announcers.
Drawn to the peace of the outdoors, Mark embraced the chance to hunt or fish. He treasured fishing the walleye
opener on Lake Gogebic and the trout opener on the streams of Farwell, a tradition he shared with his brother
Mike. Together, they upheld a remarkable consecutive 56-year streak of opening-day outings. Mark eagerly
anticipated the spring steelhead fishing trips to the Big Manistee River with his brother Dave, where they proudly
landed Master Angler steelhead.
Mark was a bachelor until age 57, when he married the “love of his life,” Deborah Lincoln, on July 5, 2014. Mark
deeply cherished his marriage to Debi, a relationship he nurtured. Their love served as an inspiration to those who
knew them.
Mark is survived by his wife, Deborah; siblings Barbara Horswill, David (Lisa) Horswill, Mike (Chris) Horswill;
mother-in-law Nancy Martin; sisters-in-law Tammy (Mark) Hermansen, Karen (Mark) Vanderlin, Brenda (Mark)
Boucher, Dawnette Schaefer; children Mallery Smith and Cameron Beck; grandchildren Madison and Nolan
Campbell (who affectionately referred to him as “Grunkle Mark”); and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Janet Horswill; grandparents Marvin and Millie Lehto and Lloyd
Harris; sister Pamela Horswill; fathers-in-law Russell Lincoln and Ronald Martin; and his beloved Probie, “the dog
of a lifetime.”
Mark lived his life on his terms. He was unapologetically honest and tremendously loyal, with a gentle spirit. He
was known for his fierce convictions, tender heart and fabulous sense of humor. He will be remembered for his
playful, giving nature, and quiet strength, matched only by his devotion to family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on June 22, 2025, from 2:00-5:00 P.M. at the American Legion Post #558, 400 E.
Ludington Drive, Farwell, Michigan.
The family extends grateful thanks to the caring staff of Hospice. They also wish to offer a heartfelt thank you to
friend Beth Methner, who selflessly provided unwavering help and support.
